Central Shenandoah Medical Reserve Corps

Who We Are

The Central Shenandoah Medical Reserve Corps (CSMRC) is a local Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) unit; a force of dedicated volunteers who stand ready to support the community in the event of a public health emergency. The Mission of the CSMRC is to serve the communities within the Central Shenandoah Health District by recruiting, training, and engaging local teams of community volunteers, to include healthcare workers, public health professionals, and non-medical volunteers who contribute their skills, expertise, and time to support ongoing public health initiatives, and to augment and assist in the public health response to emergencies and disasters.

The CSMRC is one of over twenty MRC units throughout the Commonwealth that make up the Virginia Medical Reserve Corps (VAMRC), the public health emergency preparedness and response volunteer program administered by the Virginia Department of Health. The CSMRC serves the counties of Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge, Rockingham, and the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton, and Waynesboro.

What We Do

The Central Shenandoah Medical Reserve Corps provides opportunities for community members to become involved with their local health departments, providing opportunities to learn about public health emergency preparedness, including interactive training opportunities for a variety of public health emergency response scenarios, such as epidemiological outbreak investigations, emergency shelter support, pandemic response, points of dispensing, N-95 fit testing, and emergency responder training such as CPR, Stop the Bleed, REVIVE! (opioid overdose response and naloxone administration), and Psychological First Aid.

MRC volunteers can support local health department operations during emergencies, disasters, and normal operations in a variety of medical and non-medical roles. We offer opportunities to participate in emergency preparedness exercises throughout the year, and we are continuing to update our calendar with opportunities as they become available.
