Volunteer: Sky Meadows State Park: First Saturdays (October 4) (Fall 2025)

First Saturdays at Sky Meadows State Park is a monthly event series, that sees park guests experiencing activities and educational programming meant to highlight the historical, natural, scenic, and cultural recourses that he park has to offer. Volunteers will work with Park Rangers to manage and host activity and education programs, attend to park guest needs, manage parking, and address general park needs. Volunteers will need to be at the park 30 minutes before the event, around 9:30 am.

The WWRC Recreation Department is hosting a Halloween Trick-or-Treat/Scavenger Hunt Event for our consumers, and we would like to have volunteers come and assist with the event! Volunteers may help recreation staff with the following tasks: event setup, overseeing candy distribution tables, serving as a "buddy" for a consumer during the event, restocking candy at distribution tables, interacting with consumers and answering any questions about the scavenger hunt, tallying points for the scavenger hunt, gathering event supplies, and assisting with event cleanup!


We ask that volunteers arrive early if possible so that they can be provided a quick orientation and tour of the facility!

Join us for the 23rd Annual Race to Beat Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk organized by the City of Harrisonburg Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday, October 25 at Westover Park. Proceeds from this event benefit the RMH Foundation to provide free mammograms to local patients in need at the Sentara RMH Funkhouser Women's Center. 

To help ensure that all women within our community are provided access to breast cancer screenings, will you join us in our race to beat breast cancer by participating in the run/walk or volunteering with us?

Specifically, funds raised during Care-A-Thon enables Sentara RMH Hospice to provide grief support groups to the bereaved, host memorial events, and provide training for its staff.

Below are a few things to know about the Care-A-Thon as you consider volunteering with us this year: 

The “event” will take place Monday, September 29 – Friday, October 3, 2024.The Foundation will hold a brief volunteer training via Zoom on Monday, September 29 at 3:30pm.  If you are unable to attend live, we will send the recorded version to your email immediately afterward.At the beginning of the week, volunteers will be provided with a list of 25-30 donors to call. This typically takes an hour or two to complete.This year, we are offering a hybrid volunteer formatYou can elect to conduct calls with other volunteers at the hospital (Sentara RMH Medical Center, 2010 Health Campus Drive, Harrisonburg) on Tuesday, September 30 between 5 – 8pm (dinner provided) and/or complete your calls virtually at a time and place most convenient for you.You will have until Noon on Friday, October 3 to complete your phone calls.Volunteers have the option of using a free mobile app to conduct their calls, thereby not sharing their personal phone number for security and callback purposes. One of the nice things about this event is that we send a letter to donors in advance, so they are already expecting our calls. Even better, everyone we call has made a gift to the hospital in the last few years, so we know they are supportive of our work.It would be of great help to our local community if you could dedicate some time to this important effort.
