Each month, Anicira provides over 10,000 lbs of cat and dog food to pet families in need in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County area at our twice-monthly Pet Food Pantry. The needs are great in our community, and volunteers make a huge impact in the lives of these pets and pet families. The Town of Bridgewater is looking for volunteers at our Old Town Hall museum.  Bridgewater's Old Town Hall operates solely through unpaid volunteers, allowing us to keep our doors open six days a week.  We are always actively looking for volunteers to serve as docents at OTH.  Volunteers greet visitors and oversee the various historical exhibits at OTH.  We are open six days a week (Monday-Saturday) from 10 am to 3 pm.  

The WWRC Recreation Department is hosting a Halloween Trick-or-Treat/Scavenger Hunt Event for our consumers, and we would like to have volunteers come and assist with the event! Volunteers may help recreation staff with the following tasks: event setup, overseeing candy distribution tables, serving as a "buddy" for a consumer during the event, restocking candy at distribution tables, interacting with consumers and answering any questions about the scavenger hunt, tallying points for the scavenger hunt, gathering event supplies, and assisting with event cleanup!

We ask that volunteers arrive early if possible so that they can be provided a quick orientation and tour of the facility!

We accept groups of up to 10 people to help us process donated items. Volunteers are needed to assist with trail construction and maintenance, facilities and grounds maintenance, visitor services, and interpretation and environmental education. We are looking for creative minds to help launch a public outreach program. You can illustrate, animate, write, dance, we don't care! But we want to reach new audiences for bat conservation. Bats are diverse and conservation should be too!

Volunteers will work toward developing a program highlighting bats' contribution to agriculture. Volunteers can expect to interface with local outreach agricultural organizations to research needs, develop outreach materials for the general community, help at outreach events, and develop relationships with local farmers' markets to install/display materials.

We are open to creative ideas, and you don't have to be anywhere at any particular time at share a love of bats. OK, there might be a few deadlines as opportunities arise, but we promise not too many.

HOURS: We are very flexible but we would like to see our volunteers at least weekly. Hours can be any time from noon until 6 pm.

LOCATION: This is a hybrid project with some time spent at the headquarters and other hours spent in self-directed action or outreach events.

Provide a fun enrichment experience for children and adults visiting the At Home in the Woods Family Garden. You will serve as Family Garden host for our activity cart full of educational activities for families. Interact with families using these materials. Support refugee and immigrant families with school aged children so that they can best succeed academically in the United States. Students will have from zero to basic understanding of the English language. Most parents do not speak English and cannot support students in their learning process.

Preferably able to commit volunteering through the end of the spring semester.  According to your preference, you are able to tutor siblings instead of one child for the whole semester. Tour Guides: Assist education staff with tours and educational programs, primarily for pre-K through 3rd grade students. We seek volunteers who can help us inform and connect guests to SNAP benefits, so they can benefit from improved access, quantity, convenience, and choice of food.

As a SNAP Outreach and Education Volunteer you will help by: 

Virtually assisting guests in the completion of SNAP applications. 

Virtually assisting guests with submitting verification documents.

NewBridges Immigrant Resource Center is looking for volunteers to help with front desk responsibilities including recording phone calls and inquiries in our database, speaking with walk-in clients, and other administrative duties. Eligible volunteers must be fluent in Spanish and English and available at least 8 hours/week between 8:30-4:30 Monday to Thursday. Total number hours per week are negotiable. Ideal candidates will be able to commit to a minimum of 2 semesters - either summer/fall or fall/spring. Opportunities are available immediately; this is an unpaid position.

On most Friday mornings we transition our community center into a restaurant for the Harrisonburg community to enjoy. It serves as an on-going fundraiser for Our community Place, as well as a means of engagement with our local community. The Friday Lunch Restaurant is run by OCP staff, volunteers, and people who receive services from our organization. 

Restaurant skills are a plus but not required. We train new volunteers each week.

The restaurant itself is only open for two hours: 11:30am-1:30pm. The 9:45am-2:30pm shift includes the weekly meeting, set-up time, running the restaurant, eating together after the restaurant is finished, and then cleanup. Volunteers must sign up or notify staff ahead of time during the week that they want to volunteer. Volunteers may not show up on the day of without prior notice.

Volunteer orientation is required before starting. Orientation is 30-45 minutes. It is available in-person or via Zoom. Our in-person meeting takes place in our Yellow House office at 80 East Johnson Street, Harrisonburg.

New Directions Center is currently seeking volunteers to answer our crisis hotline. This is a remote opportunity and is great for those looking to make a big impact with a small time commitment. Schedules are for 4 hours, Mon-Fri from 8am to 12pm and 12pm-4pm. Volunteers are welcome to work as many or as few shifts as they like. New Directions Center is a non-profit organization working to reduce the impact of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking through survivor-centered advocacy, support services, community education, and awareness.

New Directions Center is currently seeking volunteers for an Office Assistant. The volunteer will perform a variety of office activities including answering the hotline, greeting incoming clients, and assisting with light clerical work including copying, filing, data entry and other duties as necessary.

Hours & time commitment:

- M-F 10am - 2pm  (M,W, F - Remote, T, Th - onsite)

- up to 20 hours/week (can be split among multiple students)

Our Community Place provides case management assistance to community members who are experiencing housing insecurity. One of our strongest initiatives is placing people into housing out of homelessness, in coordination with various local agencies. As our community members find housing, or relocate residence, there is often the need for providing a moving crew. We also receive donations of furniture and other household materials from the greater Harrisonburg community for which this crew is also called upon.

This role is on an as-needed basis. Volunteers are contacted by a member of our housing team up to 48 hours ahead of time.

There are a variety of tasks that a student could work on as part of their time at the Heritage Center, depending on their interests. These include, but are not limited to: administrative tasks (mail pickup/dropoff, bank deposits, reviewing and organizing files, etc.), developing marketing materials (posters, pamphlets, etc.), website design and revision, assisting with elementary school fieldtrips (setup, or as a guide/presenter), tour guiding, artifact cataloging and organization, library cataloging and organization, historical research and data entry, museum exhibit design and construction, grounds maintenance, landscaping. There’s a large diversity of work to be done here, and we envision this position to be very flexible!

As a Gallery Docent, you will work with the public by answering the door, greeting visitors, explaining the exhibits and enforcing galley rules.
