The volunteer would be assisting the food pantry with distribution of food to the community. They may be packing boxes or delivering to the vehicles as this is a drive thru pantry.

Tuesdays and Fridays 11:30am - 2:30pm

Under the guidance of our staff, you will be working directly with our Club members assisting with various daily activities including homework assistance, art creation and being a buddy. The ability to build relationships and encourage positive behaviors is key to this position.

Our greatest need is in our three County Clubs: Timberville, Grottoes and Elkton. We have three City sites which can be considered also.

2/hrs per visit, minimum of 20 hrs semester

Background check required along with payment for the background check at $15/ea. Students can sign up 2 per location/time but no more than two. Days to volunteer are determined by Club needs.

Share your time and be an adventure “Virtual Reality” Guide for our residents at Bridgewater Retirement Community. Volunteers will serve as “tour guides” and engage in conversation with residents identifying where they would like to go and what they would like to do all from the comfort of our community. In addition to completing volunteer orientation, volunteers for this opportunity will have separate training on how to use our “Rendever Virtual Reality system.” Enjoy the opportunity to connect BRC residents with a memory of the past or experience something they have always wanted to do.

The Spotswood Elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) would like volunteers to help sell concessions during our school skate night and to help monitor student safety while students roller skate. This enables PTO board members to have time to build connections with the community members and families who come. This is a community building event, and a highlight of the school year for our families.

Holiday Cards or Feel Good card can be made at JMU or any location of the groups choosing. Completed cards can be dropped off at the Sunnyside Front Desk or if students would like to hand deliver them to each resident, we would need to set up a date and time. We would need at least 2 weeks in advance notice. This opportunity is great for larger groups looking for volunteer services. The Blue Ridge Free clinic provides free health, dental, and mental care to those in our community without health insurance as a bridge to health. We are looking for student volunteers who are interested to help in a reception capacity. They would greet patients arriving for dental or mental health services and help them check in/out. Basic computer skills needed. The role will likely allow down time to study while not busy with patients. We request the student(s) volunteer at least once per week during the same time slot for at least 1 year. The available times are Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday from 8:45am - 12pm and Tuesday 4:45pm - 8 pm. We look forward to you joining our team and volunteering for our community. WorldTutors.Academy excels at creating joyful academic support and cultural exchange opportunities across domestic and global communities. We welcome students and professionals to join our peer-to-peer tutoring program as we share our knowledge and skills with multiple individuals and communities throughout the world.

WorldTutors is a direct peer-to-peer tutoring program, providing access to essential educational opportunities that include conversational English, literacy skills, mathematics, specialized subjects (literature, biology, etc.) and digital literacy. We are currently able to teach students in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Our tutors, like our students, live across the globe.

WorldTutors works closely with member students and communities to help determine needed educational and cultural opportunities and then pairs these students with appropriate tutors so that both groups can enjoy a positive experience.

Our tutors are provided with the resources, materials and skills needed to best fulfill the requirements of the position. Both tutors and students have the joint opportunity to learn and grow from one another.

Volunteers will assist therapists and participants with exercise sessions. Participants are either limb-loss survivors, persons with Parkinson's disease,  or have experienced CVA (i.e., stroke).

This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a group of highly motivated participants.

Play & Lead a Music Activity for a Small Group Pleasant View supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Many of the individuals we support enjoy music of all kinds.  Many who participate in our day program like listening to live music and participating in group music activities. 

We have a piano, electric keyboard, bells for adaptive bell choir, karaoke music, microphone, speakers, sound system, and assorted small instruments you can incorporate into your music time. 

In the past, we have had several musicians who enjoyed visiting weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly to lead music in our day program.  The music activity can also just be a single opportunity.  You can come as an individual or a small group.  With a small group of volunteers, some volunteers can help individuals with disabilities who want to participate in the activity but need help.

Key Responsibilities: Assist Support Services with organizing and filing important documents.  Help individuals with disabilities complete surveys by asking questions and recording responses. Socialize with individuals supported by Pleasant View to build connections and foster a welcoming atmosphere.

Ideal Qualities: Friendly and approachable with excellent communication skills. Organized and detail-oriented. Comfortable interacting with individuals with diverse abilities. Able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate respect for all individuals.

To make our parent teacher meetings more accessible for all families in our school community, we need volunteers to help assist with and supervise activities for our students and their siblings while parents and guardians meet. For this Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meeting, volunteers will help supervise children for 30 minutes. Activities will be provided. The total time will be one hour, to allow 15 min for set-up and clean-up.

To make our parent teacher meetings more accessible for all families in our school community, we need volunteers to help assist with and supervise activities for our students and their siblings while parents and guardians meet. For this PTO meeting, volunteers will help supervise children for 1 hour. Activities will be provided. The total time will be one and a half hours, to allow 15 min for set-up and clean-up.

One of the services SVMEP provide families, that is also one of the most valued by families in the program, is tutoring. Our in-home tutoring program is fairly large, we have about 30-40 volunteer tutors each semester who we place with migrant students in our program. The placements take place in the home and are held twice a week, for the length of an hour.  Given that we have so many tutoring placements, a crucial part of the tutoring program is having the support of our Tutor-Liaison Assistant.

A Tutor-liaison Assistant's main responsibilities are to check-in with tutors weekly and ensure that they are attending their placements by checking their weekly tutor updates they submit via Canvas. In addition to this, below are some additional tasks for this role:

Volunteer Tutor's primary responsibilities would include hosting one-on-one educational sessions in the homes of our migrant families. Volunteers will be able to complete an average of 15-20 hours during the semester, dependent on the start date. You are encouraged to reach out as early as possible in the semester. Additional General Job Duties:

Internships require a minimum of 12 hours per week during normal business hours of 8:30am-4:30pm. Occasionally, after hours and weekend hours may be available.

Each month, Anicira provides over 10,000 lbs of cat and dog food to pet families in need in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County area at our twice-monthly Pet Food Pantry. The needs are great in our community, and volunteers make a huge impact in the lives of these pets and pet families. 2nd & 4th Saturdays 8am - 10 am

Volunteers from multiple JMU organizations meet weekly on Thursdays from 4-5pm for routine maintenance of our school garden, nature trail, "Mindfulness Meadow", and other learning spaces. We will be doing manual labor most days such as planting, weeding, mulching, painting, stick fort building, etc. Please come prepared to get a little bit dirty with closed toed shoes on.

We’ll tackle a variety of fun and meaningful outdoor projects—from clearing paths and sprucing up cabins to prepping program areas for the busy months ahead. Whether you love yardwork, light construction, organizing, or simply being outdoors, there will be something for everyone.

As a volunteer for WOW you would work as a 1:1 mentor with a veteran, service member, or their family member/caregiver. Taking them through pre-planned wellness activities and creating a connection with your mentee. During program you will help them look at financial literacy and career-readiness resources. To become a mentor you will need to be safeTALK trained and go through military cultural competence training. We will provide these trainings to you. Young Adults Rise is looking for someone to facilitate the program for twentysomethings in Harrisonburg. A detailed curriculum and tools are provided for the facilitator, so there is limited preparation time needed. The group will be no more than 15 people. We are looking for someone in a mental health program who may want to study this program as part of their advanced studies. The facilitator should be a good listener, empathetic, willing to accept people where there are, be able to move conversation along while making sure all viewpoints are heard.

The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is looking for an Excel-savvy intern or volunteer who can provide one-on-one guidance to our Office Assistant, Tish. We’re seeking someone patient and knowledgeable who can help her learn the basics of Microsoft Excel and improve her comfort with the program.

Tour Guides: Assist education staff with tours and educational programs, primarily for pre-K through 3rd grade students. Training and full semester commitment required. Most tours are weekday mornings. Busiest seasons are mid-Sept through mid-November and March through May. (Availability in May is especially helpful.)

Education volunteers: Needed year-round for programs & workshops, and special events such as Harvest Fest in October, Watershed Experiences in spring and fall, and Summer Camp sessions.

Family Garden Hosts: Two-hour shifts staffing an Activity Cart in the Family Garden area. Share additional educational materials to with families and groups. Available year-round in good weather.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as “food stamps,” helps millions of low-income Americans put food on the table. Many people who already qualify for SNAP benefits are not enrolled in the program for reasons that include stigma, transportation issues, or lack of knowledge.  

We seek volunteers who can help us inform and connect guests to SNAP benefits, so they can benefit from improved access, quantity, convenience, and choice of food.

Please note: This position has the option for both virtual and in-person work. 

As a SNAP Outreach and Education Volunteer you will help by: 

Virtually assisting guests in the completion of SNAP applications. 

Virtually assisting guests with submitting verification documents. 

Entering all related data from completed SNAP applications and outreach events into a Food Bank spreadsheet. 

Following up with guests through check in phone calls as they continue through the application process. 

Attending food distribution events at the Food Bank or at Food Bank partner agencies where you will share eligibility requirements for SNAP and answer commonly asked questions. 

Communicate SNAP eligibility requirements with guests at Food Bank or partner agency program events. 

Pre-screen people with low incomes for SNAP eligibility at Food Bank or partner agency program events.

As a Warehouse Volunteer, you will pull orders for our partner agencies (Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens, Shelters, and Outreach Programs), unload trucks, break down pallets, and provide other general assistance in the warehouse as needed.

Due to the nature of the work and the safety of our volunteers and employees, good mobility is an important requirement for this position, as is the ability to lift 20-30 pounds. A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is a plus.

For everyone’s safety, all volunteers must wear close-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops) and clothes appropriate to work in a warehouse environment. You may also want to wear layers as our warehouse is not heated or cooled and temperatures may vary.  

When You Arrive:  

Sign in at the Kiosk. You can find a kiosk in the front hallway (to the left) or in the warehouse in the pedestrian walkway. After you sign in, please check in with the Warehouse Assistant.

NewBridges Immigrant Resource Center is looking for volunteers to help with front desk responsibilities including recording phone calls and inquiries in our database, speaking with walk-in clients, and other administrative duties. Eligible volunteers must be fluent in Spanish and English and available at least 8 hours/week between 8:30-4:30 Monday to Thursday. Total number hours per week are negotiable. New Directions Center is currently seeking volunteers to answer our crisis hotline. This is a remote opportunity and is great for those looking to make a big impact with a small time commitment. Schedules are for 4 hours, Mon-Fri from 8am to 12pm and 12pm-4pm. Volunteers are welcome to work as many or as few shifts as they like. New Directions Center is currently seeking volunteers for an Office Assistant. The volunteer will perform a variety of office activities including answering the hotline, greeting incoming clients, and assisting with light clerical work including copying, filing, data entry and other duties as necessary.

Hours & time commitment:

- M-F 10am - 2pm  (M,W, F - Remote, T, Th - onsite)

- up to 20 hours/week (can be split among multiple students)

There are a variety of tasks that a student could work on as part of their time at the Heritage Center, depending on their interests. These include, but are not limited to: administrative tasks (mail pickup/dropoff, bank deposits, reviewing and organizing files, etc.), developing marketing materials (posters, pamphlets, etc.), website design and revision, assisting with elementary school fieldtrips (setup, or as a guide/presenter), tour guiding, artifact cataloging and organization, library cataloging and organization, historical research and data entry, museum exhibit design and construction, grounds maintenance, landscaping. There’s a large diversity of work to be done here, and we envision this position to be very flexible!

As a Gallery Docent, you will work with the public by answering the door, greeting visitors, explaining the exhibits and enforcing galley rules.

As a Museum Shop Worker, you will be responsible for manning the cash register and checking people out when they are ready to leave. 

During down times, you may be asked to do a variety of tasks the assist the staff members, including but not limited to, preparing mailings to be sent out, stocking the shop, and more.
