  • Quality Education -- SDG #4

Who We Are

The STEM Center creates opportunities for JMU students and faculty to engage in meaningful STEM education outreach that is both personally and professionally rewarding. STEM Corps is the community of ~70 JMU students from any and all majors who volunteer in our largest partnership, a Friday afternoon STEM program with K-5 children in Harrisonburg City Boys & Girls Club.

What We Do

STEM Corps is open to all majors because engaging kids of all backgrounds and interests in science and math-driven problem solving needs to be a cross-disciplinary effort.

Our goals are to foster STEM interest, create a sense of "belonging in STEM" and enrich school learning. STEM Corps members teach one-hour STEM lessons in groups of 2-3 STEM Corps: 5-6 kids on ten Friday afternoons from Sept-April. Members decide which and how many they attend.

We want students who will dedicate the time to preparing by studying the lesson plan in advance, show-up with a positive attitude, and show kids how learning and working as a team to meet a design challenge or answer questions by completing a science investigation can be fun and rewarding.
